Project information
Current status: Complete, awaiting deployment
The IXID Identity Provider project was initially part of the Animus Online
greater project. It has, since then, turned into a standalone project mainly due
to the fact that the current supposed global identity provider (OpenID) was
considered too difficult to use for what it really offered.
IXID Identity Provider thus aims to be simple to use by both webmaster and web
user, to provide a functional interface for web sites and give them the
opportunity to have an enormous ammount of users at their fingertips. It aims to
not interfere in any way with the other facilities of a web site, and not harm
user experience.
For the moment, the IXID Identity Provider supports only ASP.NET applications (of
.NET version at least 2.0), but it will be expanded in the future to support
Java, ColdFusion and PHP applications as well.
Advantages and main features
- Easy to implement - in most cases, your site will only require that you pop a
simple control on it and it will be IXID-ready.
- Easy to use - for a user, steps are simple: register once, verify an e-mail
once, input your data once... all ONE TIME ! From there on, a user can benefit
from IXID as much as he/she wants.
- Centralized - unlike other identity provider systems, IXID is centralized,
meaning the webmaster will be spared the jungle of different providers and
implementers. Actually, a webmaster will not have to care about that most of the
time.
- Trusted - due to its centralized nature, a webmaster can always be sure that a
user is coming from the right provider, and not from some obscure, just-added,
unchecked and error-prone provider that may have suddenly popped up somewhere in
the world.
- Clean - accounts are checked for activity automatically, and a list of inactive
accounts is created every day. All these accounts are notified and, upon no
response, deactivated, then deleted.
- Caring - should anything happen to the holder of a user account, he/she has the
advance option to have a secondary notified person (or group of persons), so
that they may verify and confirm the status of the account holder. Therefore, no
business will be lost.
- Private - We will display just as much information as you want us to display.
- Automated - There is no human being taking care of your personal data...
- Automated and private - ...therefore there is no human being that will know your
personal data.
- Social - IXID has a messaging system which is either standalone or tied to your
e-mail. In the future, it will also have the ability to manage IXID messages
from your favorite mail client.
- Verified - A user can verify his/her account, so that all parties can know for
sure who they are doing business with.
- FREE - it costs nothing at all.
Disadvantages and drawbacks
- As a webmaster, you'll have to register as well in order to be able to use the
application
- We'll be kindly asking you to update it whenever we release a new version
- It may not look as cool as other identity provider systems
- It's not open-source (but we did mention that it's otherwise free, right?)
